Hi-Wall Fan Coil Unit Explained: Features, Specifications & Applications

Hi-Wall Fan Coil Unit Explained: Features, Specifications & Applications

A hi-wall Fan Coil Unit is the most familiar FCU format — mounted high on a wall, similar in appearance to a split AC indoor unit, but running on chilled water instead of refrigerant piped directly from an outdoor condensing unit. Jaideo Automation supplies the Daikin Hi-Wall Chilled Water Fan Coil Unit.

What Is a Hi-Wall Fan Coil Unit?

A hi-wall FCU is an indoor terminal unit connected to a building’s central chilled water system. Chilled water flows through a coil inside the unit; a fan draws room air across the coil and delivers cooled air directly into the space. Because it connects to centralized chilled water rather than running its own refrigerant circuit, a hi-wall FCU is simpler to install and maintain than a comparable ductless split system in a building that already has a chiller plant.

How Fan Coil Units Work, in General

Every FCU format — hi-wall, ceiling concealed, ceiling exposed, or high static — shares the same core mechanism: chilled (or hot, in a 4-pipe system) water flows through a finned coil inside the unit, a fan draws room or return air across that coil, and the conditioned air is delivered back into the space. A condensate drain pan and pump handle the moisture the coil pulls out of the air during cooling. What differs between formats is only how the unit is mounted and how the air is delivered — wall-mounted and direct for hi-wall, hidden above the ceiling with ductwork for concealed formats. The rest of this guide covers the hi-wall specifics; see our 2-Pipe vs 4-Pipe FCU guide for how the water side of that system is configured.

Where a Fan Coil Unit Fits in a Chilled Water System

The FCU is the terminal, room-side component of a chilled water HVAC system — the chiller produces chilled water centrally, and that water is distributed to FCUs (and air handling units) throughout the building. See our Types of Chillers guide for how the central plant side works.

Why Choose Hi-Wall Over Other FCU Formats

  • Fast, simple installation — mounted on the wall, no ceiling void or ductwork required
  • Direct room delivery — no duct losses between the unit and the occupied space
  • Easy access for filter cleaning and servicing, since the unit is visible and wall-mounted rather than concealed
  • Familiar control layout for occupants, similar to a split AC

Where It Doesn’t Fit

If a clean, equipment-free ceiling appearance matters — hotel rooms, premium offices, hospitality projects — a concealed format is usually preferred over hi-wall. See our Ductable Ceiling Concealed FCU guide for that alternative.

Applications

  • Residential and apartment projects connected to a central chilled water plant
  • Retrofit projects where ceiling void space isn’t available for ductwork
  • Small offices and clinics needing simple, visible, easily serviced terminal units
  • Server or equipment rooms needing straightforward, reliable cooling

How Hi-Wall FCUs Compare to Other Terminal Units

Jaideo supplies every common FCU configuration: the Ductable Ceiling Concealed FCU, Ceiling Exposed FCU, Ceiling Mounted Cassette FCU and High Static FCU. To compare formats, see Ceiling Exposed vs Ductable FCU and High Static Fan Coil Units. If you’re not yet sure FCUs are the right approach, see Fan Coil Unit vs Split AC, and for capacity, the FCU Sizing Guide. For room-level control, see the TB3 Communicating FCU Thermostat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hi-wall fan coil unit?
A hi-wall fan coil unit is an indoor terminal unit mounted high on a wall that connects to a building’s central chilled water system, cooling the room by passing air across a chilled water coil.

How is a hi-wall FCU different from a split AC?
A hi-wall FCU connects to a centralized chilled water system, while a split AC runs its own refrigerant circuit to a dedicated outdoor condensing unit. FCUs are typically used where a central chiller plant already exists.

When should I choose a hi-wall FCU over a ceiling concealed FCU?
Hi-wall FCUs suit projects prioritizing fast installation, easy servicing access, and lower cost, while ceiling concealed FCUs suit projects where a clean, equipment-free ceiling appearance is required.
